Commercial framing is bought in stock lengths and cut to a takeoff, so almost every job ends with usable drops and unopened bundles. It's genuinely valuable surplus, but it's the category where compatibility bites hardest: these systems are proprietary and parts rarely cross between manufacturers or even between series.

Before you buy
Surplus is only a bargain if it fits and it's documented. These are the questions worth asking on this category specifically.
- Get the manufacturer and series number — Kawneer, YKK AP, EFCO, Tubelite, and CRL profiles are not interchangeable, and neither are different series from the same maker
- Confirm thermal versus non-thermal; a thermally broken mullion and its non-thermal equivalent look similar and perform very differently
- Ask what comes with it. Framing without pressure plates, caps, gaskets, and screws is a partial system, and the accessories are often harder to source than the extrusion
- Match the finish precisely: anodized class and AAMA 2603/2605 paints vary batch to batch, and adjacent members from different lots will read differently in daylight
- Check lengths against your takeoff — stock lengths are typically 24 or 25 feet, and drops may be too short to be useful
- Inspect for die marks, twist, and end damage; extrusions stored unsupported can bow permanently
Common questions
Can I mix curtain wall components from different manufacturers?
Generally no. Pressure plates, gaskets, and captured glazing pockets are designed to specific tolerances for a specific system, and mixing them compromises the water management and structural path. Even within one manufacturer, different series often don't interchange.
Will surplus anodized aluminum match my existing framing?
Not reliably. Anodizing varies between production runs, so two Class I clear anodized members from different lots can read noticeably different in direct light. For visible adjacent work, get a sample and look at it outdoors before buying quantity.
